China’s Automotive Design Surge: A New Era of Innovation and Global Influence
In the fast-evolving world of automotive design, 2023 marked a pivotal year for China. No longer seen merely as a manufacturing hub, the country has emerged as a global leader in automotive innovation, with its design language gaining recognition on international stages. The transformation is not just technological but deeply cultural, strategic, and systemic. At the heart of this shift is a new generation of designers who are redefining what it means to create vehicles that are not only functional but also expressive of national identity and forward-thinking vision.
Among the key figures shaping this transformation is Fan Jihan, Deputy Director of BYD’s Design Center. With over 16 years at the company and a central role in designing more than 30 new and facelifted models, Fan has become a defining voice in China’s automotive design evolution. His insights, shared in an in-depth feature in Design journal, offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at how Chinese automakers have moved from imitation to innovation, and from domestic players to global contenders.
Fan’s narrative of China’s automotive design journey is structured in three distinct phases: “unreachable,” “on par,” and “surpassing all.” This tripartite framework captures not just technical progress but a profound shift in confidence, creativity, and global ambition.
The first phase, spanning from 1978 to 2007, was defined by technological dependency and design imitation. In the early years of reform and opening-up, China’s automotive industry was underdeveloped, with limited engineering capabilities and minimal design autonomy. Joint ventures with foreign automakers dominated the landscape, and domestic brands often relied on reverse engineering to produce competitive models. During this period, design was largely a secondary concern—focused on cost efficiency and functional replication rather than originality or brand expression.
However, this era also laid the foundation for future growth. Independent design studios, though small, began to gain experience by working across multiple brands and projects. These early efforts cultivated the first generation of Chinese automotive designers, many of whom would later join in-house design centers at major OEMs like Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), Chery, Changan, GAC, and SAIC. By the late 2000s, these companies were beginning to develop their own design identities, signaling the end of blind imitation.
The second phase, from 2008 to 2019, marked the beginning of parity. This period saw a strategic shift as Chinese automakers began to invest heavily in design infrastructure. International designers were recruited, design centers were established, and systematic design processes were implemented. The goal was no longer just to match foreign competitors but to build brands with distinct visual identities.
One of the most significant milestones during this era was BYD’s launch of its Dynasty series, which integrated Chinese cultural elements into automotive design in a cohesive and marketable way. Under Fan’s leadership, the “Dragon Face” design language was introduced—a bold, aggressive front-end treatment inspired by traditional Chinese aesthetics. The use of Chinese characters as logos, the dragon-inspired grille, and the “Chinese knot” taillights were not mere decorative choices but deliberate acts of cultural assertion. These designs resonated deeply with domestic consumers and garnered international acclaim, including awards such as the iF Design Award for the BYD Han in 2021.
The success of the Dynasty series demonstrated that design could be a powerful tool for brand differentiation and emotional connection. It also signaled a broader trend: Chinese automakers were no longer content to follow global design trends—they were beginning to set them.
The third phase, beginning in 2020, is what Fan describes as “surpassing all.” This period has been defined by China’s rapid ascent in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, where it now leads in both production and innovation. The rise of BYD, in particular, has been nothing short of meteoric. From a relatively unknown player two decades ago, BYD has become one of the world’s largest automakers, surpassing even Tesla in EV sales in certain quarters.
This success is not solely due to technological prowess—though innovations like the Blade Battery and CTB (Cell-to-Body) integration have been critical. It is also a result of superior design strategy. BYD has developed a multi-brand architecture, with each brand occupying a distinct segment and expressing a unique design philosophy. The Ocean X Face for the Ocean series, the Π-MOTION for Denza, the “Cosmic Universe” for Fangchengbao, and the “Time Portal” for Yangwang—all reflect a sophisticated understanding of brand positioning and consumer psychology.
The Yangwang U8, launched in 2023, exemplifies this new era of Chinese automotive design. With its imposing presence, quad-motor “Easy Four” platform, and futuristic lighting signatures, the U8 is not just a vehicle but a statement. It won the iF Design Award in 2023, a rare achievement for a Chinese brand in the premium SUV category. More importantly, it represents a shift in how Chinese cars are perceived globally—not as budget alternatives, but as legitimate contenders in the high-performance, high-tech space.
The 2023 Shanghai Auto Show served as a global showcase for this transformation. International media and industry leaders flocked to the event, not out of curiosity but out of necessity. The level of design sophistication, technological integration, and brand clarity on display was unprecedented. For the first time, Chinese automakers were not just participating in the global conversation—they were leading it.
Fan attributes this shift to several factors. First is the speed of iteration. While traditional automakers often take 48 months to bring a new model to market, Chinese companies like BYD have reduced that timeline to 24 months or less. This agility allows for rapid response to market trends and consumer feedback, creating a dynamic design ecosystem that thrives on continuous improvement.
Second is the emphasis on user-centric design. Rather than designing vehicles based solely on engineering constraints or aesthetic preferences, Chinese designers are increasingly focused on real-world usage scenarios. This “scenario-based” approach considers how people actually live with their cars—how they park, charge, interact with infotainment systems, and personalize their driving experience. The result is vehicles that feel intuitive, practical, and emotionally engaging.
Third is the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual simulation. AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) is already being used in early concept development, allowing designers to explore thousands of design variations in a fraction of the time. Tools like OpenAI’s Sora, described as a “World Simulator,” could soon enable fully immersive virtual prototyping, where entire driving environments are simulated in real time. While some fear that AI will replace human designers, Fan argues the opposite: that it will elevate their role. Designers will no longer be limited to sketching and modeling—they will become strategic storytellers, user experience architects, and data interpreters.
This technological shift also raises important questions about authorship, copyright, and responsibility. If an AI generates a design, who owns it? How do we ensure ethical use of data? What happens when a design flaw leads to a safety issue? These are not hypothetical concerns but real challenges that the industry must address as AI becomes more embedded in the design process.
Despite its progress, China’s automotive design industry still faces challenges. Originality remains a point of contention. While many Chinese designs are now clearly distinct, some still bear traces of inspiration from global brands. Fan acknowledges this, noting that while the “floor” of design quality in China is high, the “ceiling” has yet to match the most iconic global designs. Building truly original design languages takes time, consistency, and deep cultural confidence.
Brand recognition outside of China is another hurdle. While BYD, NIO, and XPeng are gaining traction in Europe and Southeast Asia, they are still not household names in markets like North America or Germany. This is partly due to regulatory barriers and market entry strategies, but also because brand equity is built over decades, not years. Chinese automakers must continue to invest in long-term brand storytelling, design consistency, and customer experience to establish themselves as premium global players.
Internally, the industry must also address talent development. While China produces thousands of design graduates annually, there is a gap between academic training and industry needs. Many design programs still emphasize traditional sketching and rendering over digital tools, user research, and systems thinking. There is also a lack of cross-disciplinary collaboration—between design, engineering, marketing, and data science—that is essential in the modern automotive world.
Fan advocates for a fundamental reform in design education. He calls for curricula that are more closely aligned with industry trends, greater emphasis on hands-on projects, and stronger partnerships between universities and automakers. He also stresses the importance of fostering creativity from an early age, noting that innovation is not just a skill but a mindset that must be nurtured throughout a person’s education.
Looking ahead, the future of Chinese automotive design is both exciting and uncertain. The industry stands at a crossroads where technological disruption, environmental imperatives, and shifting consumer behaviors are reshaping the very definition of what a car is. Electric vehicles are no longer a niche—they are the mainstream. Autonomous driving, while still in development, is influencing design decisions today. And shared mobility is challenging the notion of car ownership altogether.
In this context, design is no longer just about styling—it is about reimagining the entire user experience. Interiors are becoming more like living rooms, with lounge-like seating, ambient lighting, and expansive screens. Exteriors are being optimized for aerodynamics and sensor integration rather than just visual appeal. And software is becoming as important as hardware, with over-the-air updates allowing vehicles to evolve long after they leave the factory.
BYD’s upcoming 2024 lineup reflects this holistic approach. At the Beijing Auto Show, the company will unveil the Yangwang U7, a flagship luxury sedan that promises to push the boundaries of performance, technology, and design. The Fangchengbao Super3 and Super9 concepts—featuring a two-seater “double cabin” layout—signal a bold move into niche, lifestyle-oriented segments. These are not mass-market vehicles but expressions of brand identity and design ambition.
Fan sees these projects as proof that Chinese automakers are no longer just reacting to global trends—they are setting them. “We are no longer following,” he says. “We are leading with our own vision.”
This leadership is not just about aesthetics or technology. It is about values. Chinese design is increasingly reflecting a philosophy of sustainability, inclusivity, and cultural pride. It is about creating vehicles that are not only smart and efficient but also meaningful and emotionally resonant.
